You’ve decided that beauty school might be the right path for you, congratulations! While a trade school can be vastly different from the university experience, many things are the same.
Choosing a school, sorting out financials, and working school into your unique schedule are all facets of the decision making process that play a part in shaping what the next portion of your educational life will look like.
One of the most common questions we get asked at The Salon Professional Academy(TSPA), Fort Wayne, however, is how long does beauty school take? Every state requirement is different depending on their licensure standards, but here is a quick breakdown of what the state of Indiana looks like. In many cases, you can graduate beauty school in less than a year, and under a year and a half on part time schedules.
Beauty School Hour Requirements in Indiana
- Cosmetology: 1500 hours, approximately 47-75 weeks depending upon schedule.
- Esthetics: 700 hours, approximately 35 weeks.
- Cosmetology Instructor: 1000 hours in addition to your license, approximately 50 weeks.
Why Do Program Lengths Vary?
In short, we offer a variety of scheduling options to allow for our students to pursue the career training they want, even if they have time constraints from things like family responsibilities and kids, jobs, or other personal commitments that make traditional schedules difficult.
For those students who are able and willing to pursue a full time education, our cosmetology program is designed to be thorough and effective but also allow for a quick graduation. For students pursuing part time schedules, or lower hour programs like esthetics, part time schedules are still available and tend to be significantly quicker than career training and degree programs at traditional institutions.
In Indiana, continuing education is not a requirement for license renewal. We think that continuing education is a great way to stay up to date on the industry and refine and improve your skillset, but since this training is not mandatory it alleviates the stress of attending workshops or trainings annually.
How Often do Classes Start?
Every institution and program is a little bit different. With that in mind, cosmetology, one of the most commonly popular programs at TSPA Fort Wayne, usually has start dates monthly. That means that by this time next year, you could be well on your way to a career in the industry.
Smaller or lower hour programs may start more infrequently, so it’s best to contact our admissions staff for information on programs like esthetics or instructor training.
